Awards

The SA Burlesque Community Awards aim to promote & acknowledge community-minded practices on individual, business, and industry scales. These individuals, groups, businesses, or events make demonstrable contributions to the burlesque community in their relevant category. With plenty of performance competitions out there, we want to honour the off-stage actions that shape our local community.

The awards are primarily focused on the actions & achievements of the past year, 2024. However, long-term achievements, pursuits, & impact will still be considered in the final selection stage.

Nominees must involve burlesque as a primary or significant aspect of their practice and must be one or more of the following:

  • SA-based (individual, group, business, event)
  • SA-geared (virtual events, online spaces)
  • SA-originated (national events/movements started in SA or by an SA-based individual)

Self nominations are welcome and we encourage you to be generous in nominating others. You can submit multiple nominations per category, as well as nominate the same person/business/event for multiple categories. “Double submitting” the same nominee for the same category multiple times will result in voiding of the additional nominations.

Awards Committee members and their enterprises are ineligible for nomination.

NEW Nominations Process

Nominations: Put forward up to three names per category. Quantity of nominations will help to determine our finalists, so encourage all your friends to submit their favourite performers!

Finalist Selection: All nominees will be e-mailed a questionnaire/online “interview” to help our Awards Committee determine our finalists. Our judges will meet for the first time for this, taking both quantity of nominations & questionnaire responses into account.

Statements of Support: Once finalists are confirmed, you will be able to submit a supporting statement to help boost their chances of winning. These can be as brief or comprehensive as you like, they will all be considered.

Winner Selection/Announcement: Awards Committee meets for the second time to determine winners based on all available information. Winners are announced at the ceremony and have the opportunity to speak on their win if they wish.

Awards Categories

Burlesque Community Achievement Award

The overall award for outstanding community achievement in any form. The winner of this award will be a person, business, or group with a significant, demonstrated contribution in community development & support – often in many facets of their practice. This award is the “big one” and the reason the SA Burlesque Community Awards was created.

Community Space

Awarded to a venue or location-based event that continually demonstrates community-minded practice. What’s the performance venue you feel most at home in, either as an audience member, patron, producer, or performer? Where did you find your burlesque footing?

Community Spouse

Not officially a burlesque performer, producer, or even crew, these friends and partners are supportive of everyone who needs it. Awarded to a person who does not (or does not regularly) participate in burlesque in a formal role but always goes the extra mile to support.

*Diana would like to dedicate the establishment of the Community Spouse award to “Fringe Husband” and “Burlesque Dad” Jackson who will never be eligible because he’s sleeping with its creator.

Community Event

Awarded to an event, either one-off or ongoing, that unites & further develops the South Australian burlesque community. Events must either occur in South Australia (in-person) or be geared towards the South Australian community (virtual).

Mentor Award

From teachers, advocates, and formal mentorships to kind chats and friendly advice, the recipient of this award encourages the professional & creative development of performers with generosity and expertise. They use their years of industry experience to boost up newcomers and generally keep community spirits (and skill levels) high.

Excellence in Access

An event, place, or person with an ongoing dedication to accessible practices. They have dynamic and creative solutions to access barriers, financial & time investment in access provisions, or otherwise promote access and disability inclusion in their community.

Far and Wide

Spreading the burlesque gospel across the state, these events, performers, or producers operate outside of the Adelaide Metropolitan area. This can also be awarded to regionally touring metro-based artists.

*Visiting interstate artists with events in regional SA may be nominated.

A Pair and a Spare

The backstage angel that saves your assels every time. They’ll share and loan items, always bring snacks for the group, have a second to help with costume repairs, an extra length of wig tape, or happily buckle your shoes when you’ve put your corset on first. Is it organisation, self-discipline, or some kind of psychic skill that allows them to anticipate our forgetfulness? Either way, we all owe one or two of our performances to these lifesavers.

Motivational Speaker

They always know just what to say when the nerves are kicking in. They’re a green room guardian angel and the first person you go to in a pre-performance crisis. The pep-talk expert who reassures you that nobody noticed your costume malfunction or reminds you of the old adage “you are the only one who knows your choreography” when you need to hear it.

Super-Friends

Burlesque troupes, groups, schools & fams that intensely support each other and those around them. This could be a particular production cast, troupe, class, or even an SA-based social media group. People that make you feel welcome, that empower you, and welcome & support the development of industry newcomers.

History In The Making

Awarded to a community member that is baked into the foundations of the SA Burlesque industry. Originators of the scene as we know it, these folks have had a long-lasting presence and impact on the art form. Whether producing, mentoring, or performing these nominees have always had that je ne sais quoi that ripples out, setting trends and standards that affect our art today.
